LHHS Staff: Where are they today?

Mrs. Malek Hits the Big Time!

Mrs. Dalynn Malek, LHHS teacher for the past 17 years, was chosen as one of five winners of the California Teacher of the Year Award. She qualified for this competition by being selected as the Orange County and the Saddleback Valley Unified School District Teacher of the Year. As a "Hawk," Dalynn has taught visual arts, acted as the yearbook advisor and has been the School Site Coordinator. Before teaching at LHHS, she taught at Serrano Intermediate School for eight years.
Dalynn believes that, "art gives a student balance and a chance to exercise the other side of the brain." She explained, "They may not use calculus on a daily basis, but they will always use art. The way they dress and other aesthetic choices they make will define who they are." (Hawks in Flight Editor's Note: "I can't wait to see Mrs. Pfaff's reaction to this quote!")
As many of you know, from taking her classes, Mrs. Malek's classroom walls are covered with student artwork. During class you may have listened to CD's (tapes for you older graduates) of Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra or even Vivaldi. Over the years, in this relaxed environment, students lost track of time as they created numerous works of art.
As part of her award, Mrs. Malek received $16,000 from a foundation established by Mr. and Mrs. Gross.
